Hi Pamela, thanks so much for your comments and for visiting The Changebase. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed what I wrote on volunteering and the benefits it provides both the recipient community/organization and the person giving their time and energy. I am familiar with UniversalGiving and I encourage people to take a moment to visit the site, get inspired, and get involved!
All the best,
Ashley

Thank you for sharing this powerful story and such wise thoughts on the value of volunteering. I commend you for your courage in going into the unknown by choosing to volunteer internationally. I've volunteered often myself, at Glide Church in San Francisco in fact, and also all over the world. International volunteering has led to many of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had in my life. It’s provided perspective. It’s instilled an overwhelming sense of gratitude.

I’ve found that the people we serve, wherever we volunteer, appreciate that you care to spend time with them, listen to them, and help their community. Beyond giving material goods, our visits to these people make them feel cared about and loved. We all need that.

We hope to make an impact. And ultimately, we're impacted more. As you observe, volunteering lets us see what it's like on the ground, much more so than if we simply write a check.

I wish you all the best in your volunteer trip. I hope you'll find it an incredible experience.

All my best,
Pamela

Nice story, and I especially like the thoughts generated from that little incident.

Getting our hands dirty may not be the most difficult part, and I think the real challenge comes at the end of the day how much satisfaction we could come get from the "dirty hands". I like your attitudes.

BTW, I'm going to Brazil too. Don't be scared. It's going to be fun!!!
